Vault Christmas Market

Since its inception, I have been heavily involved in the design and organising of Vault’s annual Christmas Market and this year I thought it would be good to come out against the increasing use of AI generated images in daily life.
I wrote a short piece for Vault about AI and the market and here it is.

When we founded Vault Artist Studios in the deep past of 2017 we did so with the idea that art could improve things, that art could build and enrich communities and make radical creative change to our home city of Belfast.

There was no way we could have envisioned a time when the creative output of the world would be fed into a corporate planet killing plagiarism machine that ate creativity and spat out a gloopy unearthly simulacrum that would be fed back to us as AI ‘art.’

When we did the call out for this year’s Vault Christmas Market stallholders, we thought it was important to specify that we wouldn’t accept applications from people using generative AI to make ‘art’. That’s because we believe in Art and we believe in our makers, designers, artisans, craftspeople and creatives to construct beauty with their hands and minds and not through prompting machines run by people who are hell bent on flooding the world with horrible slop and misinformation.

Vault Artist Studios, supporting human creativity since 2017.

Here’s to the future!
